How the conversion works

A pixel has no fixed physical size. It only becomes a length once you say how many pixels fit in one inch — the DPI, or PPI. Multiply the inches by it to get pixels.

Strictly, DPI counts a printer's ink dots and PPI counts screen or image pixels, but for this arithmetic they are the same number.

pixels = inches × DPI

Worked examples

  • 8.5 in × 300 DPI = 2,550 px
  • 20 in × 96 DPI = 1,920 px
  • 3.5 in × 600 DPI = 2,100 px

Choosing a DPI

72 dpi
Legacy screens & PDF points
Older Mac displays and the PostScript / PDF point, where 72 points make one inch.
96 dpi
Standard screens
The default for web and Windows. One CSS pixel is defined as 1/96 of an inch.
150 dpi
Draft prints
Proofs and large posters that are viewed from a distance.
300 dpi
Standard print
Photos, flyers, brochures and documents. The usual target for print-ready files.
600 dpi
High-quality print
Fine line art, small text and detailed illustrations.

About the inches to pixels calculator

This inches to pixels converter turns an inch measurement into an exact pixel count, using whatever DPI or PPI your project needs. Type a value in inches, or a width and height for a 2-D canvas, and the tool converts inches to pixels instantly, with no page reload and no account required. It is built as a lightweight in to px calculator: enter one number, pick a DPI, and read the pixel result straight away.

The math behind an inch to pixel conversion is simple multiplication: pixels equal inches times DPI. A 1 inch square at 96 DPI is 96 pixels; the same inch at 300 DPI is 300 pixels. Because a pixel has no fixed physical size on its own, the DPI value is what ties the digital and physical measurements together, which is why this inches to pixels calculator asks for both numbers rather than assuming a default.

Inches to pixels at 300 DPI and other common settings

Most people converting inches to pixels are targeting one of a handful of standard settings. Screens use 96 DPI, older Mac and PDF-point conventions use 72 DPI, and print work usually settles on 300 DPI, or 600 DPI for fine detail. Converting inches to pixels at 300 DPI is the most common print calculation on this site: an 8.5 x 11 inches to pixels conversion at 300 DPI comes out to 2,550 by 3,300 pixels, the standard size for a print-ready US Letter page.

Common inches to pixels conversions

Because certain sizes come up again and again, the reference tables abovealready cover the conversions people search for most: 2 inches to pixels, 2.5 inches to pixels, 3 inches to pixels, 3.5 inches to pixels, 4 inches to pixels, 5 inches to pixels, 6 inches to pixels, 8 inches to pixels, 8.5 inches to pixels, 11 inches to pixels and 12 inches to pixels, each shown across five DPI values. The print-size table also works out 4x6 inches to pixels and 8.5 x 11 inches to pixels at 150, 300 and 600 DPI, since those two sizes cover most photo prints and standard documents.

Built for accurate, reliable results

The calculator also handles the input side of an inches to pixels conversion carefully. It accepts thousands separators, rejects invalid entries such as negative numbers, exponents or more than one decimal point, and shows an inline message instead of a silent wrong answer. Results are formatted to a sensible number of decimal places rather than a long floating-point string, and a copy button lets you grab the exact figure shown for pasting into a spec, a design tool or a printer's order form.

Why use an inches to pixels converter instead of doing the math by hand

A single multiplication is easy to get wrong when you are switching between DPI values for screen, draft and print output, or when a brief calls for something between 96 and 300 DPI. Using an inches to pixels calculator removes that risk: it rounds consistently, validates the numbers you enter, and lets you switch between a single dimension and a two-dimensional canvas without re-deriving the formula each time. That makes it useful for setting up print files, checking image resolution before an upload, turning a print spec into pixel dimensions for a designer, or comparing how a size looks across different screen densities.

Every conversion on this inches to pixels converter runs locally in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server or stored anywhere. Whether you need a one-off inches to px conversion or a working inches to pixels converter to keep open in a tab, it stays free, fast and accurate for any DPI value you enter.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers on DPI, formulas, and how the tool handles your numbers.

How do I convert inches to pixels?

Multiply the inches by the DPI (dots or pixels per inch): pixels = inches × DPI. For example, an 8.5 × 11 inch page at 300 DPI is 2,550 × 3,300 pixels, and 20 inches at 96 DPI is 1,920 pixels.

How many pixels in an inch?

It depends on the DPI: 1 inch is 96 pixels on a typical screen (96 DPI), 72 pixels under the legacy 72 DPI convention, and 300 pixels at standard print quality (300 DPI). Multiply 1 inch by whatever DPI your device or printer uses to get the exact figure.

What DPI should I use?

Use 96 for how sizes render on most screens (one CSS pixel is 1/96 of an inch), 72 for legacy Mac and PDF point conventions, 150 for draft prints, 300 for standard print quality, and 600 for high-quality print or fine line art. If you know the DPI or PPI of your target device or printer, enter it as a custom value.

Is DPI the same as PPI?

Strictly, PPI counts pixels per inch on a screen or image, while DPI counts ink dots per inch from a printer. For converting inches to pixels the arithmetic is identical, so this tool treats them as the same number.

Can I convert a width and height together?

Yes. Switch to the 2-D canvas tab to convert width and height at once. One DPI value applies to both dimensions.

Is anything I type sent to a server?

No. Every calculation runs in your browser. There is no account, and nothing you enter is uploaded or stored. The only thing saved on your device is your light or dark theme choice.
